Mom’s Corner
So here’s the thing. It’s been over a half year since I launched Dover’s World and my Mom is clearly still the star of the site! As a matter of fact, I think she may be plotting a non-hostile takeover, afterwhich I will onl be responsible for editing and cleaning up her grammatical errors. And you know what? I’m loving every minute of it!

Dear Robert’s Mom:
Congratuations on the “biggest critic award” and your appointed position as website non-horse information content expert.

Thanks Dale,
I am glad to hear from you. It gives me hope others will follow. Love Robert’s mom
Karin Offield — January 29, 2009 @ 6:37 am
Hello Mom Robert , Karin Offield here from very far away. Holland ! Robert told me you had a wonderful time at Christmas ! Super ! I was wondering if you’d tell us about Robert when he was a preteen. I haven’t hear too much about that time of his life…and I am wondering…did you ever ride horses ? Take care, and have fun ! xoko
jean Dover — January 29, 2009 @ 12:17 pm
Dear Karin,
I can truly tell you that Robert was a very special child. Even when he was little he was very caring about his family. Once he heard is Dad & I talk about getting a new refrigerator and how expensive they were. Then we decided to move. He came into the Kitchen and said. Well Mom now you don’t have to worry about the refrigerator!
Now I will tell you a cute story about Little Robert at about 9. We had a Wirehair Terrier called Sketter. I don’t know why but back then we didn’t nuttier animals. Robert came running into the kitchen shouting. Mom Sketter married the poodle down the street and is HIS Mother mad!
I know you are a very good friend and very important part of Robert’s life. Karin you are a very beautiful & lovely Lady.
May 2009 treat you kindly.
Love Robert’s Mom
jean Dover — January 29, 2009 @ 12:25 pm
Dear Karin. No I never rode a horse after my Girl Scout Camp days. You see I went strait and the horse I was on went around a tree! His Dad was a Western rider and looked like a real cowboy in his wonderful outfits on his beautiful Palomino. That is another story for another time.

Jean Dover — February 2, 2009 @ 10:19 pm
Dear Jane,
Robert was here for lunch today and said you had sent me a sweet message. I never received it! Tomorrow I will ask him to check it out. I had just been reading the great story about your your life in SideLines Magazine. You can be very proud of all you have accomplished over these last, can it really be, 20 or more years!
Love to You and your Husband,
Robert’s Mom
Susan L Rosen — February 3, 2009 @ 4:35 pm
Jean,
I got your email. You must be very proud of Robert. I have enjoyed looking at the website and found it very interesting. I have never been on a horse in my life, but have “bet” on a few. We are looking forward to seeing you at Rayes party. We also enjoyed being with you at the baby shower. Be well.
Love, Sue
Bernie — February 4, 2009 @ 1:28 pm
Dear Robert’s Mom,
How wonderful you’re on this great site! If you had to name one particular moment in Robert’s riding career that has made you most proud, what would that be?
And for a variation, the same question only in Robert’s life?
Very best wishes,
Bernie x (English Bernie)
Jean Dover — February 5, 2009 @ 11:13 am
Dear Bernie,
There have been so many proud moments for both my Husband and me it is hard to single out one. Every ride Robert won was one such a moment.
I don’t know how old you are Bernie but way back when Robert was the first rider to change the status quo and do his Musical Kur to popular music instead of classical. The judges were none to happy about that. However when we saw his ride to stripper music and watched Romantico do the Passage bumps
down the side line with every one on their feet clapping and cheering that had to be one of those moments we will never forget.
Jean Dover — February 5, 2009 @ 11:30 am
Me again Bernie, Another thrill for us was being healthy enough to go to Denver & see Robert being inducted into the Dressage hall of Fame by Dr. Samuel J. Barish USDF President December 4th in Denver. My heart was filled with pride at the wonderful things said about his 30 year career and how he has given back to the Dressage World and all Equestrian sports.
On a personal level I think his two foundations The Equestrian Aid Foundation and The Education Fund Educate A Child and Smile make us very proud indeed.
Love Robert’s Mom
Jean Dover — February 5, 2009 @ 11:35 am
Dear Sue & Marge,
Thank you for viewing Robert’s Website and his Mothers
blog!
We too enjoyed our time together on those happy occasions. Dear Ray’s 90th. birthday party will be another.
See you soon.
Love Robert’s Mom
Bernie — February 5, 2009 @ 2:01 pm
Dear Robert’s Mom,
Wonderful to hear your take from the ‘Mom side’. Actually I am a similar vintage to Robert, a little younger, but I didn’t start to follow Dressage until the nineties (I first met Robert in Barcelona) so I missed out on the Romantico times. I’ll bet that was amazing though, as I can recall when everyone stayed ‘classical safe’ or used that awful synthesised music!
I used to write about Dressage until I took up law a few years ago, so now I have to ask you how you felt about reading about Robert in the press? Did anything annoy you? (I hope nothing of mine did, but I am prepared that Robert’s Mom doesn’t mince words, so shoot!)
My very best to you,
Bernie x
Jean Dover — February 5, 2009 @ 8:09 pm
Dear Bernie,
I spoke to Robert tonight to ask about you as I had no idea weather you were a Man or Woman. He said you were a lovely lady that used to write about Dressage and were now taking up law. Good for you. Robert’s Older Brother was a Lawyer and then couldn’t stand making so much money defending criminals he decided to become a Judge. He said if he got the criminal off the Police hated him. If he didn’t get the criminal off the criminal hated him. It was a no win situation. What kind of law are you pursuing If you look up Albert Dover Nevada City Judge you can read about him. He is now retired and at his retirement was given a court named in his honor. Al is 8 years older then Robert and really was a great help in raising him. Robert’s Mom
Jean Dover — February 5, 2009 @ 8:23 pm
So Bernie I got carried away and didn’t answer your question. I always thought the papers were very fair to Robert. It took a long time to get our Sports Writers to recognize Dressage. Jumping still gets the most coverage but Dressage is getting there too.
The Dressage Today Magazine kind of irked me. Robert was honored at the USDF Convention by being inducted into the Dressage Hall Of Fame, They pretty much ignored that honor only writing abut the FEI Dressage Task Force Robert is on.. Robert made light of it but I said it was one of the most thrilling moments of our lives. Love, Robert’s Proud Mom
Bernie — February 6, 2009 @ 3:06 pm
Hi again Jean,
Quick message to say you clearly have so much to be proud of in your sons.
Love talking to you, will ask you some more things once I have some assignments out of the way!
Love, B
Jean Dover — February 6, 2009 @ 6:16 pm
My Dear Friends,
Please allow me to vent my feelings about a problem having nothing to do with the horse world, or does it?
My Husband and I have 4 wonderful, devoted Adult Children. Besides two Sons we have to great Daughters. We hear from them almost every day and see them as often as their lives allow.
That is not the case with many people living in our Senior complex.
One woman hasn’t spoken to her Son for months. When she calls her Daughter-In-Law says He is out or not available. She had a massive stroke and was found after a fiend came over late in the afternoon because she never answered the phone.. She called the Son, was only able to speak to the Wife, and explained what was going on. No response so Social Services is taking care of her. Another Old Lady with Alzheimer’s and Diabetes has two Sons living in the same town. The Care Giver is only paid to see her 3 hours three times a week. They never answer calls from the Care Giver or come to see Mom.
How about the old couple who started out for the Doctor’s office & decided to go see their Daughter in NC! They had little money. She had no purse or medicine. A police Officer saw them going so slow he pulled them over and noticed their licence plate was one athorities were looking for. Their Daughter was on a cruise. She flew in. I thought she would realize they needed to be in Assisted Living. Get this! They are still here and driving their car every day! So my Dears what is wrong with this picture? Which kind of Adult are you.

Jean Dover — February 8, 2009 @ 7:44 pm
Well, I heard today that a beautiful young girl is coming onto our, I mean Robert’s website. I saw a picture of her and to be honest she is a dish! Do they still say that? Anyway since no one is likely to ask me any questions if they can ask a 20 something (only guessing) I decided to write a few of my favorite memories before SHE takes over! If I sound jealous….maybe I am, so sue me!
Robert was riding at a Wellington Dressage Show and had blown away the competition.. Two elderly ladies were walking by me and I heard one say..Robert could train any horse to look fabulous. I walked up to them and said, I am Robert’s Mother. Would you like to meet him? Oh No said one, we are happy just to look at him.
When we were in Atlanta in 69 for the Olympics a lady came up to me and asked for my Autograph. I said why would you want my Autograph? She answered, anyone who could have a Son who looks so perfect on his Mount, rides so great and trains a different horse for each Olympics must have a great Mom. Wow, I was so Proud but I had to admit it was his Dad who passed on the riding genes.
There was an article in the Chronicle some years ago. A noted rider from England said. Robert could pick up a Bay Side Nag, get on him and drag him up to the podium!
Now you understand that is what others said. I, his mother, only thinks he is The Best!
Bernie — February 11, 2009 @ 4:19 pm
Hehe….I think I know that rider from England very well indeed…Love Bx
RDover2 — February 11, 2009 @ 6:52 pm
Well Mom, you’ve done it again! I feel like Grace from Will and Grace when her Mom comes to town and the spotlight is all over her. Actually I am very happy that my mother has produced by far the most traffic on DoversWorld. Just make sure you keep on plugging my symposium tour and try to sell advertizing space. I mean really, you’ve finally gotten a job at the age of 39 and I’m expecting great revenues to start flooding in or I’mgoing to have to double your hours and reduce your wages to — oh, that’s right– you don’t get anything now.
Hmmm, oh well. Keep up the good work, Mom! Love ya!!
Robert
Jean Dover — February 12, 2009 @ 11:56 am
Dearest Robert,
Why oh why did you have to tell me this is work and not just for fun? I was enjoying it so and now I have to ask everyone to please help me out and book more symposiums and advertisers to please give you their products to sell. So help me out here YOU who have the power!
Thanks for saying I am 39. You know Robert no one can be more thrilled then I to be 81. Yesterday Dr. Murray of Bascom Palmer once more called me a medical Miracle. I have to thank G-d for every day is a gift.
About my picture… I guess I have to accept that is the way I look. Chit! Such is life.
I sure enjoyed the new editions to the website . I was touched to tears reading the tribute to Brentina & Debby Mc Donald
Love Robert’s Mom
Jean Dover — February 13, 2009 @ 8:22 pm
Well no one has hit my blog for a few days so I decided to tell a few more cute things about Robert’s childhood. Ready?
We had company for dinner and the Children came in to say good night. Three left. Robert lingered. Finally He came up to me and whispered in my ear ” If you let me sing I will go to bed!”
Another time we had relatives over and his Great Aunt Esther asked Robert if he would like to go home with her. To our amazement He said yes. He went right up to his room and came down with his PJ’S and tooth brush in a red pillow case and off they went. We kept expecting them back in a moment. Remember Robert was only 4. The next day Aunt Esther called and said He was an angel. He ate, slept and was ready to come home only it was snowing hard. They took a cab. He said Aunt Esther why don’t you have a car? She said well Uncle Morry has to take the car to work. Oh He said,Don’t worry Aunt Esther I will tell my Dad to buy you car so you never have to take a cab again.
You better write because I have more!

Dear Bx,
Thanks for the compliment. I just received the most beautiful flowers for Valentines day from The Roberts. They sure make us feel loved. I hope your day is also filled with love, fun and Joy.
Robert’s Mom
I hope someday to meet you in person so I can give you a big hug!
Jean Dover — February 16, 2009 @ 12:42 pm
Julie Ross, Robert’s Mom asked me to tell all about my parents and growing up, Jean!
My Mother Fay was very beautiful with great big Green eyes. She and my most handsome Dad Albert eloped at 19. When they came home He was afraid to tell his Mother! My only Brother who I always adored and drove crazy because I wanted to hang around with him was born a year later and I was born 5 years later. There was so much love and laughter in our house. Even when we lost the home Dad had built to the depression and moved to an apartment I never felt lacking in anything important.
My Father never walked if he could dance. I can still see him dancing down the long hall way. My Mom was dressed in beautiful Hostess gowns by the time He came home. We were lucky to have Teresa doing the housekeeping. She had a bed in the dinning room. My Father gave her away when she got married. My Mom gave me all kinds of dancing and singing lessons. My Grandmother would always say Jeanne darling sing something for us. You should be on Major Bowes! My brother would say, Ya, Sing far a way and all alone.
Herb and I married on October 12th 1947. My Father died at 45 two months after our wedding of the Colon Cancer he fought since he was 40. He walked me down the isle and danced at my wedding. His last words to me before he died were to remember the Baby I told him I was carrying
I don’t know if you believe in life after death but I can truly tell you after Albert was born I was in my room quite awake and happy. Suddenly my Father was standing by my bed. He said, I saw the baby and He is beautiful. When The nurse came n later and saw me crying she said why are you crying I said these are tears of Joy.
I came from Love and tried to give that love back to my Children. I hope I succeeded

Dear Robert’s Mom,
What an exceptional son you have produced! It is hard raising sons but when they turn out well, it is very worth every minute you put into it.
I was so fortunate as to get to ride a horse whose input he had into the training and I will never again be so fortunate as to ride another like him. Your son’s skills and dedication are far reaching and impact not just the viewers but the people living ordinary lives.
Good job, Robert’s Mom.

Kay Moss-Dore — February 18, 2009 @ 2:27 pm
Dearest Jean, Your own blog! Lucky girl. And you get to talk about your favorite subject…family. You and Herb are the best and your children are so lucky. You are beautiful inside and out. Have fun. Much love, Kay Moss-Dore
Jean Dover — February 19, 2009 @ 12:40 pm
Dearest Kay,
Thanks so much for all the compliments. All our Children their Spouses and Animals give us great joy.
Kay you were one of Robert’s first good friends in Florida. You helped him to get to know the right people and many became his riding students way back in 83. Your kindness to Herb & Me was really appreciated. You always saw to it we sat under cover and even brought a cart to drive us around in. Then you gave us two yellow chairs to keep in the car when all else failed.
Kay I know you have a lovely Mother but over the years I felt like you were also a little bit mine.
And how about our joint venture selling Jewelry at the horse shows. Remember when we were rained out and still had to pay for the weekend! Hearing from you brings back so many great memories.
Lovingly,
Robert’s Mom

What do you mean you don’t like your picture?!? As Robert would say, “I should slap you for that!” You look GORGEOUS!!!!!

Wait until I speak to the only person who could have told you I didn’t care for the picture chosen for my Blog! That was private information. Makes me sound vain right? I must admit I am and would have preferred a picture without glasses and less neck showing! After looking in the mirror and accepting reality I will settle for the picture posted and be grateful Robert wanted me on his website.
Thanks for the compliment.
You are very dear. Maybe we can arrange a face to face.
Lovingly,

Dear Friends of Mom’s Blog
Robert suggested that I write of my long battle with 3 different cancers. I refuse to capitalize cancer. If any of you think it could be of help to you or any one you know I will be glad to tell about my 37 years experience, and what I have learned along the way.
Robert’s Mom
Jane Savoie — February 24, 2009 @ 6:44 pm
Hey Mom,
I’d LOVE to have a face to face!
And, yes! I think telling us about your cancer battle would be awesome. Your story is inspirational and would give a lot of people hope.
Love,
Jane
Jean Dover — February 25, 2009 @ 11:55 am
Dear Jane,
My long Journey with cancer began when I was just 44. Strangely I had been to a Doctor for a bad cold that would not go away. He did blood work and came back and said. “Well Mrs. Dover one thing I can tell you for sure is that you don’t have any cancer in your body”. Two months later I had a right breast mastectomy. A month brfore I went to a well known Gyn.as I noticed a spot on my breast turning black. He said, ” Go home and soak your breast in hot water for 2 weeks it is probably just a bruise! Two weeks later he said I think you better see a Surgeon.
So I had my right breast removed. In those days no one asked you it was just done. I never had radiation or chemotherapy. He told me to come back in a month as I would probably have to loose my left breast too.. Instead my Mom Aunt & I flew to Chicago where the wonderful Doctor from Germany was displaying his new invention called Mammography. It was a huge ball that you put your arms around. He came out and said. “Mrs. Dover you have no left breast cancer. Don’t let anyone tell you you do.”
So that was it for the next 34 years until one day in 2003.
That is enough to tell you a big truth. DON”T SETTLE FOR ONE DOCTOR’S OPINION NO MATTER HOW WELL KNOWN HE.
MORE TOMORROW,
Love Robert’s Mom
Ron — February 25, 2009 @ 11:50 pm
Dear Robert’s Mom,
How do you stay so youthful looking?
Jean Dover — February 26, 2009 @ 12:49 pm
Oh My, I guess I could say I live right, eat right, and have good genes! I guess people that believe in Santa would buy that. The truth is I had a face lift at 73 and think that it is holding up well as I am now 81..
I think keeping a youthful figure helps too. Weight has never been a problem for me. I love to eat so I am lucky I weigh about 106 most times at the Doctors office with my cloths on.
Thanks for asking. You too look amazing even for your young age. Keep it up.
Love, Robert’s Mom
Jean Dover — February 27, 2009 @ 10:15 pm
I really don’t want to talk any more about cancer. What I would like to say to all out there is to read everything you can about your type of cancer. Then find out who the best Oncologists are. Not from your Internist as they always suggest their friends. From Hospitals in your area, State and the Country. Good information can be found on the Internet. Good Samaritan in Huston is known for their success fighting cancer. Going there saved my life as my Oncologist said not to bother with Iressa as it was very expensive and wouldn’t work. Robert said You are talking about My Mother and off we went to Huston. Iressa helped me for over 5 years. I became AstraZeneca’s Poster Girl. It usually only works for 2 to 4 years.
Next I had 12 radiations on my hip and started what would ultimately be 10 Alimta treatments one every 21 days. I read about Alimta and the literature wasn’t encouraging as it usually works for 2 months! The paper said even two months more life is good! I have been in remission since October 16th. I see my Oncologist this next week so please all you kind caring people out there say a Prayer for me.
God Bless. Just remember NEVER GIVE UP.
Love Robert’s Mom who has had many miracles in her life.
Bernie — March 1, 2009 @ 9:02 am
God Bless you Jean, will be thinking of you next week, Bernie xx
Jean Dover — March 1, 2009 @ 12:44 pm
Thanks Bernie,
I believe all prayer helps. I pray for all who are sick. The list keeps getting longer. How sad is that!
I also pray for our world that is so full of hate and people killing each other The Good Lord must be discussed with Mankind.
I think if anyone wants more information they can send me their questions & I will be glad to answer as truthfully as I can.
I hope one day you get to Florida so I can express my thanks in person for all your kindness to Me.
Love,
Robert’s Mom

I am absolutely praying for you. My mom was diagnosed with stage 3 lung cancer last year, has had 35 radiation treatments and 10 chemos (cisplatin and vp-16) and she’s still with us. Her first post-treatment scan showed it hadn’t spread which is good news. Last night my dad told me that a CAT scan he had for a kidney stone showed a spot on his lung. I thought I couldn’t pray more, and yet now I am praying even more! Looking for a miracle that will keep my mom and dad around much longer. That’s fantastic that Iressa was able to help you for so long! You’ll be in my thoughts and prayers - Jessica
Jean Dover — March 2, 2009 @ 12:39 pm
Dear Jessica,
I will add your parents to my prayer list. Please just give me their first names.
In 2003 I was diagnosed with stage 4 Non small cell Lung cancer. It had metastasized throughout my bones. I asked the Dr. how bad is stage 4 and He answered it couldn’t be worse. It is not operable. Three months of chemotherapy didn’t work. He agreed with me that I shouldn’t try any other Chemotherapy as it made me so sick & if that was all He had to offer I said NO thanks.
Well I was blessed with a miracle. Iressa lasted 5 years and Alimta is, I hope, still working .
I think the Good Lord wanted to keep me around to take care of My Husband who has Alzheimer’s over 6 years and is doing great. He still dresses up like a doll and helps me with things like cleaning up the kitchen after dinner.
I can tell from you e-mail that you truly love your parents. I know it isn’t easy & every day is a challenge
Good luck and may the Good Lord bless you and yours.
Love
Robert’s Mom

Dear Jean, Robert’s Mom , I’m working hard at my studies right now but am also going to work hard to come to Florida to collect that promised hug, you bet! I have heard so much about you over the years, I have to meet you. Much love, Bernie
iahawk97 — March 4, 2009 @ 7:28 am
Dear Robert’s Mom Jean - My parents are Mark and Veronica. Mom’s non-operable, and was treated with very aggressive chemo and radiation, and is such a trooper. She too has NSCLC. Thanks for sharing your story - I know you said you didn’t want to talk about cancer anymore, so I’ll leave it at that, but you are such a miracle and I am so happy you have done this well for this long! This is a great website and it’s so great that you have your own “corner” to chat with folks. I check the site, and your corner everyday! Cheers and God Bless! Always - Jessica

Dear Bernie,
I know you are not in your 20ies any more. You have my deepest admiration for going for your dream to become a Lawyer and not settling for for Journalism if your heart wasn’t in it.
As you may know our Dear Robert Ross had a great career as a Jumper.
Something triggered his desire to become a Real Estate agent and at the same time get a business degree on line. He is definitely a multi tasker. Out of 90 agents He was second in closings in January. If that was not enough of a wow he also wrote a paper about the success of studying on line and after reading it the professor told him it was good enough to Publish.
Robert has warned me about spelling errors! Please forgive me if there are any. Spelling and math were never my long suits!
Love Robert’s Mom
Jean Dover — March 5, 2009 @ 12:34 pm
Dearest Jessica
Your Dad Mark and your Mom Veronica are now in my prayers. May the kind Lord bless then with long life.
Would they be willing to tell their Doctor about my success on Alimta? It put me in remission when all else failed.
I had wonderful news yesterday and will now write an article to all about it.
How sweet of you to read me daily. Tell me a little about yourself. How old you are and if you ride Dressage. Have you Brothers and sisters to hekp you at this time? I hope so.
My love to you Jessica. You are a brave lady.

Jean Dover — March 5, 2009 @ 12:54 pm
Dear Friends,
My Oncologist read the letter from Bascom Palmer which is the foremost eye hospital in the World. They said my eyes, which have multiple cancer show no change and they called it a Miracle.
After taking my blood and giving me a through exam my Oncologist said my cancer was dormant. Then he told me he was going to give me a 3000 dollar gift from a Pharmaceutical company who would run my blood through a screening test to see if there are any cancer cells in it. I asked if I could go ahead and have cataract surgery and he said yes. It will take about 4 weeks to get these results so please keep me in your prayers as you are in mine. Robert says I must watch my spelling. Please forgive my errors as spelling and math are not my long suits

Dear Roberts Mom - First of all - CONGRATS on the fantastic news! How wonderful! Prayers have been answered! I live up in the burbs of Chicago - I’m 33 (my younger sister is 30, she’s got two little ones 3 and 9 months), so most of the care for my mom falls on me. I work for a fantastic law firm and have a wonderful manager who have been very flexible with my schedule during this time. My sister is wonderful though, just has her hands full with little ones. I spent my younger years doing the jumping thing
but I am at a dressage barn now - I ride training level … I ride a 7 year old Friesian mare and a 15 year old Oldenburg mare. I haven’t ridden as much in the past 6 or 7 months because of mom’s treatments, but I try to get out once or twice a week. I am definitely going to keep the Alimta thing in my back pocket. The last scan mom had showed minimal uptake where the tumor was so that’s good news. We have another follow up in two weeks and will probably do another scan in April. The onc wasn’t sure whether he wanted to order another PET or do a CT scan .. Don’t worry about the misspellings, it happens to the best of us! Enjoy your weekend and thanks so much for the responses! I was so excited when I logged on today! Cheers! Always - Jessica
Jean Dover — March 6, 2009 @ 9:33 pm
Dearest Jessica,
It is 9:30 Eastern time and I am winding down from a busy day entertaining relatives from Indianapolis. I am happy they saw me looking well and with my good news. Herb traveled to Indianapolis on business when we were first married. He would stay with My Aunt and Uncle. Herb would sit with their two boys so they could go out to dinner. I tried to remind Herb of who was coming but He couldn’t remember. I hope He did when we were together. That is what is so sad about Alzheimer’s.
River Forest was home to us until Robert was about 8. We then headed up to Toronto. We loved it and had moved because Herb’s Dad wanted to have a factory there. It is wonderful because we made life long friends.
Our Daughter Dale works in the Attorney Generals office in Austin. So like you she is in a teriffic law firm.
I am sure what ever level you ride at you give it your best. I know it gives you a relaxing time away from the stress you must have with your Mom and now your Dad.
You are a very special person and a wonderful Daughter Jessica. Bless you for what you are doing. Let’s keep praying for MIRACLES.
Love Robert’s Mom

Nothing much new on Mom’s Blog so I decided to give you a great recipe, your family, and friends will love and want to know “How to make.”
Buy a Brisket of beef. The first cut is best but most any cut will do. Also buy 2 cans of French Onion soup.
Put the brisket into a oven roasting pan fat side up. Do not remove fat as that helps make it tender. It can be removed after it cools. Now pour both cans of soup over the brisket and cover the pan tightly with aluminum foil. Preheat the oven to 350 & cook covered for 3 hours. If you want you can add cut up potatoes after the second hour, they taste great. Cool and slice thin AGAINST THE GRAIN.
Please let me know how you and yours like it. Just don’t tell them it is the easiest meal to cook ever!
Love,

Hi Robert’s Mom,
I was just wondering what to do with a brisket of beef we have in the freezer. Now I know! Thank you SO much!
For a girl who’s a little short on time right now, this is an important contribution.
Will cook this tommorrow night and let you know how it tastes.
And, you might like to know, my graduation day will be 4th July! So special to share with all my US friends.
Much love,
Bernie
Jean Dover — March 13, 2009 @ 8:47 pm
July 4th! Wow! Independence Day from Briton, but we still are in love with Brits. I know you will get top honors and win a place at a prestigious Law Firm if you want it.
There is no place like London to see great plays. Any time I was lucky enough to act with an English actor I knew we had a hit as they all drink before a show and are relaxed and never miss a beat. I, who never drink, well maybe a wine with dinner if we are at a party, would be staggering around the stage.
Let me know how the brisket comes out. Don’t forget to cut across the grain.
Love,
Robert’s Mom

Hi Robert’s mom,
I’m so glad I scrolled down to the bottom to find the recipe for brisket…I had to have a laugh over this…My mom used to make it and it’s my brother’s absolute favorite. Mom did keep that recipe a secret and now I know why! I will have to tell my mother, the retired home economics teacher, that you posted your recipe online. She will get a kick out of this. Now I know how easy it is…see all kinds of things become known on Dover’sworld.com…:)Keep the comments and recipes coming.
Jean Dover — March 14, 2009 @ 11:05 am
Dear Meg,
There are many ways to make brisket and all of them are great. My Mother used Onions, Grape jelly, carrots and many other things & spices.. All are time consuming. Nothing tastes as great Every Time as the French Onion Soup no mater if it isn’t the greatest brisket.
I will post my Mother’s famous Chicken later when I have
time..
Thanks so much for writing. It is greatly appreciated by
Robert’s mom
Bernie — March 14, 2009 @ 4:50 pm
Jean,
Verdict is in on the brisket - absolutely lovely !
I spent about 3 minutes getting it ready (laughs!).
Will check in for the chicken recipe…
You’re a star, and happy Mother’s Day for tomorrow (am sure your family and extended family will spoil you)
Much love,
Bernie

Hi Robert’s Mom,
My daughter Meg just took me on a tour through Robert’s website and showed me your blog!!!
Great– what fun. We are wintering in Nashville instead of Vermont this year to be close to Meg, our son Jed and our grand kids.
I had just invited Meg for dinner tomorrow . Meg asked what we were having? I said brisket. What a coincidence , Meg showed me your blog and recipe. My husband Gerry got me to buy a brisket “on sale” $2 off- yesterday for St Patricks’s day. Your recipe is the way to go and the crosscut is a must! I am about to make my favorite strawberry-rhubarb pie for dessert.
Meg’s Mom Marilyn
Jean Dover — March 15, 2009 @ 9:34 pm
Dear Marilyn,
We love Corned Brisket of Beef and Cabbage. The perfect combination. Strawberry Pie to top it off. What a perfect meal. Wish I was there!
When our Children were young we lived in River Forest Ill. Herb’s wonderful Aunt Tillie would come over on Friday and cook enough meals for the week. I appreciated her help but it didn’t make me a better cook though I did learn a few of her recipes. Then when Robert was 8 we moved to Toronto and I had to cook. The joke was when the Kids came in they would say. Hi Mom are we having Hamburger Surprise? We still laugh about that. I would make two small Hamburgers and put mashed potatoes between them. Sometimes I would add mushrooms or peas. One Sunday I made spaghetti and our older daughter stood up and said, Well Mom this is the first Thanksgiving I have ever has spaghetti!
Robert’s Dad decided to become a gourmet chef. He read all the right books and magazines and for 27 years until he got Alzheimer’s I never made anything but my breakfast. I was really spoiled. So now I must admit I HATE Cooking for the two of us. I am only a fair cook. I stick mostly to the basics. We have wonderful fish in Florida. Thank goodness He taught me how to make it before it was too late.
It is way past my bed time but I must add one more wonderful thing. I and some neighbors watched the Space Shuttle take off into orbit at 8:43 tonight.. It was so magnificent I cried. My Husband said why are you crying. I said I was so thrilled, but then I always cry when I am over joyed.
Love Robert’s Mom
If I miss spelled words forgive me.
Jean Dover — March 16, 2009 @ 10:03 am
Happy Monday Morning,
I just decided to take some of my favorite Oven Fried Chicken out of the freezer for tonight’s dinner. I always make at least 6 pieces so that is three meals I can put together in a hurry. When my Mother made it she had to put corn flakes into a bag and roll them out. Now you just go to the store and they are on the shelve. There is even a recipes on the back of the box. So you wonder why I am sending you mine. First of all I prefer thighs with the bone in. It is much juicer. Robert doesn’t eat dark meat so I make breasts too in case he surprises me with a visit.
I use lactaid free skim milk to dip it into. I put a little Olive oil into the bottom of the baking dish. I leave the chicken skin side up for 45 minute and then flip it over to brown on the other side as it seems mussy otherwise. I like Lawry’s salt. It gives it a great flavor. So there you are with another quick and easy favorite of mine.
Please let me know what your favorite is so I can expand my cooking experiences.
Love,
Robert’s mom
Jean Dover — March 16, 2009 @ 10:08 am
It is so strange I never see the mistakes until it to late and what ever I am sending has been submitted. Such is life. I know you will understand and forgive this 81 year old Woman.
Have a nice day. Love Robert’s Mom

Hi Robert’s Mom - Sorry it’s been over a week since I logged back on! Work is quite busy and we’ve had a bit of decent weather up here in Chicago so I have been trying to get out to the horses as much as possible! Thanks so much for the kind words for my family! I am absolutely going to have to try both of the recipes you’ve posted. My grandpa used to make THE best fried chicken and milk gravy. All of this food talk is making me so hungry in the middle of the afternoon! Cheers! Jessica
Jean Dover — March 17, 2009 @ 11:04 am
Dearest Jessica,
Just thinking about REAL Fried Chicken makes my mouth water but since it is so unhealthy for us we have to settle for Oven Fried Chicken. Fortunately it also tastes great.
I understand it is going to be 70 in your area today. Of course having lived in the area for most of my life I know all that can change while you cross the street.
Our Daughter who lives in Austin is here visiting for a few days. We see a lot of Robert as he is only 45 minutes away but our other 3 live far away and have busy lives. Our youngest daughter is coming in April to see me through Cataract surgery. The hospital is about 40 minutes away but I have to be there at 6:30 in the morning. My hope is that after I have both eyes done I will only have to wear glasses for reading.
I pray your Mom and Dad are doing well. Please give them my love and tell them they have an exceptional daughter in you.
Lovingly,
Robert’s Mom

Jessica — March 22, 2009 @ 8:54 pm
Dear Robert’s Mom - Yeah I haven’t had that kind of friend chicken in a long time - Just thinking about it makes my mouth water! Thank you so much for the kind words. It makes me feel great. We’ve got another doctors appt tomorrow - I think it’s just blood work and then he will tell us what the next scan he is going to order is, but I’ve got a lot of anxiety about it, and it’s nice to hear your kind words. I have to say, I read back a few posts and saw you mentioned you are 81. Wow - You look absolutely fantastic (I never would have guessed you much older than my mom …) and I can only hope to look as fantastic as you when I am the same age!
We’ve been lucky to have some really nice weather up this way. Spent 5 hours at the barn yesterday and even washed up some horse legs. Fun times! I hope you have a fantastic upcoming week - Cheers! Jessica
Jean Dover — March 22, 2009 @ 8:57 pm
Dear Bernie
Mother’s day in the USA is in May, but I am so lucky that Our Children make every day feel like Mother’s Day. Our Oldest Son was here in Feb. Our older Daughter was just here in March, and in April our younger Daughter comes to take care of me while I have cataract surgery. I am not worried about the surgery it is just that the Hospital is 45 minutes away and we have to arrive at 6:30 AM. Robert is never far away and calls almost every day. So Dear Bernie that is why I think every day is Mother’s day for me.
Love to you, Lucky,
Robert’s Mom
Jean Dover — March 23, 2009 @ 10:24 am
My Dearest Kate,
First let me offer my best wishes for your marriage. May it last at least 120 years and may you both enjoy perfect health and days filled with joy and the wonder of finding your sole mate at last. The Roberts did tell me some time ago that they had dinner with you and a very nice gentle man.
I have so many memories of you… where to begin. How about with the exciting horse shows. There was even one when your Parents were there. Then all the parties we both attended. You looked like a Queen in your very low backless gown. I can still see you standing in front of the mirror and saying to myself WOW what a beautiful sight. Are you still living in Kansas? Mary Ellen and Chris came to the December conference in Denver to see Robert elected into the Dressage Hall Of Fame. I couldn’t believe she was 90 or that she had a bad back. I arranged to have Her seated next to Robert so she had some of His time. It was very special to us. Probably one of the high lights of being Robert’s parents.
The sad part of that and of every day at the Dover’s is that Herb lives in the moment and doesn’t remember it after it happens.
That is one tragedy of Alzheimer’s. Looking back I now realize he had the beginnings years before I knew why we were bickering all the time. We became known as The Bickersons! Herb hadn’t worked for years but decided to get a job at the bank helping Seniors access their accounts which included using the computer. They tried having him come early before class and stay after class but He came home one day and said all the jobs were filled.
It wasn’t until 2003 that he finally went to see a Neurologist. Now here is the thing about who your Dad sees. The first Doctor came highly recommended by our GP. We sat in his waiting room for a few hours and finally he saw Herb. He had Herb stand up sit down and asked a few question then said come back in 6 months. I couldn’t stand His arrogance or anything about His uncaring manner. I asked around to people I trust and got the name of a fine Doctor who gave Herb a very good exam and put him right on Aricept. That is a must do immediately. It works by removing plak from the brain and helps for some time. Next he said to get Herb Namenda. Those two pills seem to be working. I allowed Herb to be in several trials. The problem being you never know if the patient is getting the real thing. Herb still takes care of his bodily functions, dresses Himself. He loves to get dressed up, clean the kitchen up if asked, and remembers numbers to open locks on the shed and so forth.. Many of our friends Husbands have Alzheimer’s but after a short time. maybe two years, are in Nursing homes wearing dippers.
So My Advise is to check out the Doctors on the computer. Ask for references from other patients and Pray! Herb once said to me. Jean Don’t worry so much about me because I forget and don’t worry.
If I can help you further let me know. I have a long prayer list of people I ask G-D to help. Please remind me of their names so I can add them.
Lovingly,
Robert’s Mom and always yours in time of need.
Please forgive any miss spelled words.

Dearest Jessica,
Today Was Herb’s day for a yearly check up. We arrived at 1:55 for our 2 o’clock appointment & He signed in I thought! No more with out my watching! We sat for 20 minutes and a Nurse looked out at the waiting room and said Oh dear we have been calling your home to see where you are. I said we have been here for 25 minutes. Any way one more lesson in being a care giver.. Herb was given a clean bill of health. If you had heard Him joking with the Doctor you would never think anything was wrong with him. When we arived home he said,”what is this bandage on my arm for?” I said they drew blood. He had no memory of being at the Doctor, None.
I am feeling well and holding my breath until I have my Pet Scan April 14th. So let’s pray for each other. I believe G-D loves us all and we have to put our lives in His Healing Hands.
I hope all went well with your Mom’s blood test and what ever scans they suggest come back clean.
I know the weather in Chicago changes daily so I hope you get some fine weather to ride in and relax your nerves.
Lovingly,
Robert’s Mom
Jean Dover — March 23, 2009 @ 7:51 pm
Dear Friends of Robert’s Mom,
We just finished our dinner. Last nights Brisket remains chopped up, put into a bowl of Barbecue sauce heated and on a bun with French fries, Another fast meal.
Most nights I make a simple delicious desert for myself. Herb always asks how I can eat it every night. It is easy, healthy, and satisfying. What more can one ask of desert.
I buy an Angel Food cake, cut it up in the pan into serving sizes, and freeze it. After dinner I take out one piece microwave for 12 seconds, pour a can of diced peaches or other fruits, over it add Pecan nuts and, Don’t tell on me… a tablespoon full of Fudge topping. If I have company and want to get raves I add Ice Cream on before the Fudge topping. Heavenly I promise you. So give it a try and let me hear how you like it.
Love , Robert’s Mom

jessica — March 26, 2009 @ 8:42 am
Dear Robert’s Mom - So glad to hear your husband got a clean bill of health. I’ll definitely be thinking of you with regard to the PET scan. We had our appointment Monday - blood work came back fine, mom needs to be moving more according to the doc. She’s put 7 pounds back on which is fantastic, but she’s still pretty weak. It will be easier for her to get walking in now that the deep freeze here in Chicago is over (well, hopefully it’s over). We do another PET scan in June and hopefully there will be no change. Yep, we’ve had our share of crazy weather this week. It was 70 degrees at my home in the burbs and barely 55 downtown where I work. Welcome to Chicago right? Crazy I tell you! I am going to try your dessert suggestion above. Sounds fantastic! I had bloodwork done this week too, and aside from my triglycerides, I am doing pretty well! I am (or was) pre-diabetic and have gotten it into check. Yay for me! Now to lose some more weight!
Always easier said than done! I hope you have a fantastic rest of the week and weekend! Cheers! Jessica
Jean Dover — March 26, 2009 @ 12:54 pm
Dear Jessica,
How wonderful your Mom received great news that Her cancer is in check. I am sure prayer helped along with having such tender loving care from you.
Now as to my desert. There are things you need to change as you are, or were pre-diabetic. Please buy fruit that has no sugar. Even fresh fruit will do. Forget about the fudge topping. It tastes great with out it. Try a dried fruit with little sugar. The Angel food cake is good for cholesterol but maybe you should check with your Doctor or a nutritionist first. After these steps I will rest easy if you tell me you have tried it.
It was thrilling to us to read that Robert will be announcing and talking about the Dressage in Las Vegas We were lucky to be there last time. It was so exciting to watch the Musical Kur on such elegant horses. NBC’S special station will show it live. This is a first. How great is that! Now we have to find out from our cable company how to get it!
Our weather here is crazy too. One minute it is so windy you can hardly walk. Then it rains. That is a good thing, but couldn’t it just happen at night?
Today is very warm but I think a nice walk with a hat on is in order So I am off and away.
Love,
Robert’s Mom

I am a retired President of the Thank G-d it is Friday Club. Since I am jobless except for this Blog I can get to do the really important things like become an American Idol Junkie! Yes I admit I try not to miss a single show. The 2 hour format is a little much but I even forgive them that. The talent this year makes it very exciting though I believe there are only 3 people with a chance of winning. Even my friends know I take No CALLS during the show!
Did you know there is a Senior American Idol in Florida! Yesterday they held auditions for talent. There are three judges and it pretty much works like the real thing though they don’t get to go to Hollywood but to Orlando. That may not be as glamorous but I am sure it is much more fun.
Scroll down to the further adventures of Robert’s Mom who admits I don’t know how my story got down so far and have no idea how to make it go back up. Any ideas will be appreciated.

Wednesday I took Herb to the Ear Nose and throat Doctor. The waiting room is long and narrow with rows of 4 seats going back. In the first row were two women. One was maybe 50 pounds over weight, but a pretty middle aged blond who needed to lean on her walker for support. Her friend was an older women, sweet but not too atractive. They were getting very impatient with the long wait. The blond said “This is getting ridiculous. Let’s go out for a smoke” The other one said “Good Idea.”
I who was sitting behind them said, “Ladies you are in an Ear Nose & Throat office. How can you say you need a cigarette!” The blond looked at me with daggers in her eyes as if to say who the F… are you? I said it doesn’t make sense to brother coming here if you continue smoking. With that the blond grabbed her walker and stood up and turned to me. She said “Lady I had very bad hip surgery. Everything that could go wrong did”. I said ” I hope you have a good lawyer.” With that she said “Tomorrow I am auditioning for The Senior American Idol”.
I told her that was wonderful and she burst into song. Her voice was amazing and I joined in with the syncopating notes. Soon the Man behind us began to harmonized with her. Before long the whole room was singing along. Suddenly the door to the offices opened and all the nurses came in to find out what was going on. They clapped and we all bowed and sat down. Herb was called and we wished her Good Luck and being me I said “Please Don’t loose your voice to tobacco”!
I hope the show will be televised so I can vote for her.
Love,

Robert e-mailed me He liked my story but that I should have sent it to the Webmaster to start a new stream. My response was that the only two streams I knew about were the ones too small to be a river, and the one we women hope won’t land other then where it should be aimed!
I hope all is going well with your studies. Only 4 months to go. Then the world is awaiting you. What is your specialty going to be?

I’m ploughing through studies, bless you. I have a place to do a doctorate, so we’ll see how everything works out. You’ll be among the first to know, promise!
You and Herb take great care, I’ll be in Florida to claim that hug one day,
Love Bernie
Jean Dover — April 1, 2009 @ 7:31 pm
Dear Faithful Bernie,
Thanks for taking time to e-mail when I know you are up to your elbows in work.
Herb keeps walking into my room to ask me when our Living room and Family room will be back in order. As I have told him innumerable times who knows! I had a spot that was growing on my carpet near an out side wall. I called a carpet company out to replace it only to find the mold and mildew went down the entire out side wall. The condominium Association will replace the outside wall..literally, and make sure no more water can come in. I am waiting for our adjuster to come out and give us the news as to what it will cost to replace all the damage inside.
So never a dull moment here in sunny, where it never rains but it pours, Florida.
Love you, Robert’s Mom

Hi Robert’s Mom - I hope you all are having better weather down there in Florida than we are here in Chicago! I was in Iowa this weekend visiting friends from college, and had to leave earlier than expected today as we are getting a pretty large spring storm - I saw that parts of NW Iowa are going to get 10 inches of snow! Wow! So far it’s just raining here in Chicago. I did want to tell you that I had the strawberries and angel food cake you previously mentioned this weekend. Wonderful! Mom’s had a tough couple of days - not as steady on her feet as she had been. I hope it’s just temporary, but say a few prayers for us anyway! from a very soggy chicago suburb … jessica

Dear Jessica,
I am happy you got away even if only for a few days. It was quite cold here way down in the 50ies at 6 in the morning when Dale our Daughter had to take me to Bascom Palmer for my cataract surgery. She was wonderful with her Dad, and did the cooking and taking care of all our needs. Kind of like you and your folks. I know they appreciate you as we do her.

My Dearest Granddaughter Stacy,
You are truly a beautiful young lady. But more important is you have such compassion for your friends and family when there is a need. I remember how you took care of your Mom through her surgery and how you came to take care of us when we needed you.
I do get a kick of how you enjoy my vintage clothing. Like when you wore my chain vest people wanted to buy it but you said no sale.
Sorry about the spelling Gene! I hope you didn’t get my math gene too? I had a teacher in college who said my handwriting was so bad but I had written so much I must have said something worth a c!
I heard you are getting a,s so I am happy you didn’t get my hand writing gene. Grandpa has the most beautiful handwriting. I always hate to sign after him!
Thanks for taking the time to write to me. I love you Stacy.
May your life be as beautiful as you are. Regards & Love to that hottie John Scott and of course to you.

Dear friends of Roberts Mom,
I am very excited to be able to watch the World Cup Dressage event this after noon and Saturday. I will admit it will be a challenge to stay up until 1:AM. Dearest Friends of Mom’s Corner,
It was so thrilling to watch the World Equestrian Games from Las Vegas this afternoon. Seeing Ravel win by such a big margin and listening to Robert discribe what was going on made me feel like I was there. It brought back so many wonderful memories of when Herb & I watched Robert on Kennedy in that same stadium.
The biggest thrill was listening to Herb, who has Alzheimer’s, calling every mistake and picking the winner.
It was a special day for American Dressage and Horse people from all over the world who came together in peace and harmony.
Love,
Roberts Mom

Hi Robert’s mom! Sorry I’ve been a stranger! Things have been pretty busy here in Chicago and actually this past weekend I was glued to my computer watching all of the events in Las Vegas. First of all, it was a joy to listen to Robert commentate the dressage. And how fantastic that Steffen and Ravel won! What a beautiful pair! Brentina’s retirement and Briar’s last ride made me cry! I am glad I found that Universal Sports aired all of the competitions online, as my cable provider doesn’t provide the channel! I am so glad you and Herb were able to enjoy as well! Hope things are going well down in Florida - Thinking of you guys often! Jessica

How lovely to hear from you. Yes everything about the World Cup was thrilling. My prayer list keeps getting longer and longer as we grow older and our friends and neighbors fade away.

Hi Robert’s Mom -You are not the only confused one! I always come to the blog and click on your picture to get to the part where I can write you. Things have been very busy at home - My youngest niece (11 months old) was hospitalized with a rotavirus (she’s home and getting better) and my dad had a colonoscopy today. Too many visits to the hospitals! Mom’s doing well and the weather is taking a turn for the better so we are all hoping to get out for some fresh air this weekend. The forecast says 85 on Friday and Saturday! Hoping you are having a great week! Cheers! jessica

Dearest Jessica,
I am praying for your niece. I don’t know what rotavirus is but it can’t be nice if she had to be hospitalized.
Our Daughter, about 3, once had such a deep cough she was hospitalized and Robert’s Dad stayed with her over night. The next morning when I went to see them the nurses said he had comforted all the children on the floor. He was such a wonderful care giver. Now his Alzheimer’s has stolen all that and more from this wonderful Man.
Colonoscopy is no fun but it is really the prep the night before that is the worst. Been there done that many times over the years.
One thing about the weather in your area is if you don’t like it wait a minute. These are the most beautiful days in Florida. I have been so worried about the tree I had planted after Willma took our huge Oak down in three pieces. It is a Mahogany. It was loosing it’s leaves and I was in a panic. We finally had one morning of hard rain and it is looking better. Seems strange to pray for rain but there I was wishing I knew an Indian rain dance..
Enjoy the lovely days. I remember being very hot in Chicago.
Love,
Robert’s Mom
Look for my new thread! Is that different then a stream?

Dearest Jessica,
I haven’t heard from you in May and of course that worries me. Please let me know all is well with your family.
My tests came back with no new progression. I am blessed.
Please give my love to your Mom & Dad. May this be her best Mother’s day yet!
Love,
Robert’s Mom

Hi Robert’s Mom! I am so sorry I’ve dropped off the face of the earth! I was actually in Galena last weekend with 10 of my closest girl friends from college, and work has really been quite busy! Dad’s colonoscopy went OK - Two polyps - benign - and he doesn’t have to have another one for five years now. He has not received the results of the CT on his lung. He is hoping that means that nothing came back, but sadly I don’t think he’s actively called the doc back about it.
My mom is hanging in there. She went back to work 1/2 time last week. She’s definitely tired at the end of the day, but she is happy to be back at work. Our next PET scan is next month (mid-June) with results on June 22nd. I am already becoming very anxious. Praying and praying for nothing to have metastisized. Congrats on your no new progression! That’s is wonderful and I hope and pray we hear the same news!
I did watch the Derby last week - How much fun! I have to admit that I was really hoping I Want Revenge would run, but it was great to see the “little guy” win the Derby. I hope one day to make the trek to Kentucky to see it in person!
I hope you and Robert’s Dad are doing well and will enjoy this Mother’s day weekend! Talk soon - Cheers! Jessica

Dear Mom,
I know I rarely make comments on your blog, but since today is Mother’s Day, I decided it was not only appropriate but absolutely necessary to write in to say how lucky I am to be your son. With 4 kids, all of whom were made to feel equally special, you have not only been my inspiration on how to live every day, but more importantly, how to give every day! You are still the only person I have ever known for whom I have never heard anyone say even the slightest negative thing. The opposite is actually true - you are universally loved by everyone who has ever known you. And with all you have been through, both with your own health and Dad’s, it is the love you share and that which rains down on you from heaven which is the reason, I believe, that your time here is not even close to finished.
And as I tell you anyway, this is my movie and you’re not going anywhere ’till I say!
I love you!
Robert

Dearest Robert.
I sure have a lot to live up too with all those compliments. I wondered what I would be doing for my first Mothers day. The birth of Al on the 8th took care of that as it was Mothers Day that year.. Your birthday was really on the 8th of June at midnight but after I had told everyone the nurse came in and said sorry babies are recorded on central standard time so Robert will have to have his birthday changed to the 7th!
If I hadn’t taken Dad to my audition with MGM I may have had a career in movies. I am so happy the agent asked Dad if he wanted his fiance to go to Hollywood. He answered “no way”. The agent said then get her the Hell out of here. Robert I don’t regret that one bit. My 4 children are my most precious jewels. All I have ever wanted was to know you were happy and proud of yourselves. None of you has ever let me down. I have to be the luckiest proudest Mom on earth.
There is no end to my love for all of you.
You and Robert are so special. Thanks for all your tender loving care.
I am so happy you are keeping me in your movie.
Humm.. That reminds me maybe I will bring my Flip Video camera with to our celebration !
I have to tell you I am typing this with sunglasses on as mine have gone missing. I like the smaller ones I ordered today and hope I can see out of them.
May life be kind and let us share many more Mothers Days
I love you now and forever and then on and on

Dear Friends of Roberts Mom,
The Roberts gave Robert’s Mom Julie, and me a lovely Mothers Day.
Robert picked us up with Simon in toe. He is so cute in the car. He sits on Robert’s left arm looking out the window until he gets sleepy and his head falls down on the window ledge. Then he turns around and goes to sleep on Robert’s right arm. Simon senses when we are near where we are going and gets up all excited. I am wearing the shirt with Simon’s picture that Robert sends to the cuties dog of the month.
Anyway, We had a delightful dinner outside on Lincoln Road. If you ever get to South Florida don’t miss it because that is where all the young people gather to eat shop and watch the passing parade. Lincoln road is closed to cars, and is very dog friendly.
After Dinner we went to see Madama Butterfly, (that is the correct spelling!). It was delightful but so sad as you probably know. People are so silly. During the curtain calls they booed the Captain and cheered for Madama Butterfly.
If you are a Mom I hope someone gave you a joyful Mothers day. If you are lucky enough to still have a Mom I hope you did the same for her.
Love,
Roberts Mom

Hi Robert’s Mom - I hope things are going well for you down in Florida. We are looking forward to a beautiful Memorial Day weekend here in Illinois. I hope to get out to the barn all three days! (mostly because it’s now warm enough to bathe the horses). Just wanted to drop a note to say that I hope you have a fantastic weekend! Cheers! Jessica
Jean Dover — May 26, 2009 @ 8:03 pm
Dearest Jessica,
I was so delighted to hear from you. It has been awhile. I pray for your parents both morning & night and was afraid things were not going well and that was why you didn’t write. Is is a great relief to know you had three wonderful days to spend with your horses.
We here in Florida had torrential rains every day including today. Usually it rains for a holiday and then when you have to get back to work it is gorgeous out.
As you probably read in Roberts column the Senior Dover’s World is anything but calm. We are living in a neighbor’s villa because ours is having the mold & mildew removed from all the outside walls That includes removing the dry wall inside. What a mess. Our house looks like a tornado roared through it leaving everything in a huge mess. If we want to go into to see what is going on we have to wear a mask. There are heavy green tarps covering all outside & where they are working inside.. I discovered to late it is not much better in here!
Herb is displaced because his room means safety to him. He told me when he wakes up and sees my picture on the wall he knows he is home.. Several times He has asked me who I am. This morning he asked me where Jean is. I take him in my arms to calm him as he still knows He has a problem. How sad is that! I whisper in his ear “We are in this together don’t worry.” He says, What is the matter with me?. I tell him Alzheimer’s
Now on the upside.
Yesterday while chatting with Robert on the phone I memtioned that I had retrieved three paintings that had been my Mom’s and was taking them to the Michaels to be cleaned and repaired. He said I am on my way home why don’t I stop and pick them up & take them to the place I use. The man is great & will do a good job. He carefully placed them in his car taking great care of the two street scenes.
Today he called to tell me astounding news. The two paintings we thought were important street scenes in Paris were important only because they had the place of purchase, Marshell Fiield & Co. Chicago Il., the year 1953, and the price 148.00 on the back!
The third picture my Mom had purchased because she thought the Lady in it resembled our youngest Daughter Dale with her big black eyes. It is called “Lady with Goat” painted by J P Ferrivr . He is very famous and are you ready? It is worth 10,000 or more. I am not over the shock yet! It will get more respect from now on you can be sure.
Take good care of yourself Jessica. You are a fine Daughter, and a true friend of mime.
Love, Robert’s Mom
Dear Robert, I read this note so many times my eyes are closing. If I made any spelling mistakes forgive this tired senior.

Mom, it is J.P. Serrier.
Love,
Robert
Jean Dover — May 27, 2009 @ 11:14 am
That the artist’s name is Serrier not Ferrier is news to me. I will look him up later. Thanks, Mom
Jean Dover — May 27, 2009 @ 6:46 pm
I am so thrilled with what I saw and learned about the artist Serrier. Wow one never knows what is wonderful or that what you think is wonderful is not!
Does that go for people too? Sadly sometimes Yes. You never know until you try. I always said the first year of a love affair is perfect. It is the second year that you really get to now the workings of the other half of the relationship. Mostly by the third year you are out of there….or they are. We live & learn many times until we get it right…or don’t!.
Enough rambling.
Love, Roberts Mom

Now I know this affliction can happen to anybody! Yes, Dear Friends I now have an IPHONE!
My cell was 3 years old and fading fast so off Herb & I went to get a new one. Little did I know 2 hours later I would join the ranks that can’t live without the instant gratification of having too much information about irrelevant things. Irrelevant to me anyway. Who needs ITunes . Not me. I try to avoid music I consider noise. My paper tells me what day it is. You get the idea. Stay tuned. By next week I will probably kill anyone who tries to take it away from me.
AS Robert says….Cheers.

Dear Friend of Roberts Mom,
Last night I read an e-mail from you regarding the method used to remove mold & mildew from your Las Vegas home. The method sounded great and nothing like what the crew here is doing. Today when I looked for your note I simply couldn’t find it. I wanted so much to review it especially the part about having an inspector come in and certify your home free of mold & mildew. I believe you wrote on May 7th. You said your complete house was tented. My family room, living room & bedroom are having the outside walls removed and replaced. There is nothing about the rest of the house!
I really hope to hear from you.
Love,
Roberts Mom

Hi Robert’s Mom Jean - I hope things are going well down there in Florida. Are you going to be able to move back into your home soon? How’s the iPhone? Just to give you an update - Mom had a PET scan yesterday and we go for results in a week. I hope and pray every single minute for a no evidence of disease progression diagnosis. She’s been feeling well, so I hope that means good things to come! It’s been quite chilly up here in Chicago, which is disapointing because it’s supposed to be summer! I loved your story about the artwork! I miss Marshall Fields so much! Macy’s still does the windows for the holiday season, so at least we get to see that! I hope you and Herb are doing well! Talk soon - Cheers! Jessica
Jean Dover — June 13, 2009 @ 6:45 pm
Dearest Jessica,
If prayers morning & night help your Mom should get great news.
Thanks for taking time from your busy schedule to e-mail me! I was beginning to feel like no one read my blog any more. Enough self pity.
No, we are still living in a Snowbird’s house for the last month. Hopefully we will be in our home in 10 days to two weeks. The painting of all rooms started today. Your can’t paint one wall, right?. Next, about Saturday, comes the carpet. Then the real work begins. Jessica, when you remove dry wall the dust gets into every crack which means every drawer, every closet, every shelve, and decoration must be cleaned. I have hired a Company to do most and will over see things to be sure they get put back where they belong.
Robert’s Dad suffers the most. He feels displaced as he has no room of his own where everything of his waits for him. The difference this month has made is frightening. Sometimes he doesn’t know me. Other times he is wonderful. A great thing is that he is never mean though he tells me I don’t do much right. I have learned not to take it personally as all Alzheimer’s victims show this behavior. So I don’t answer & just smile. In company or with strangers they think nothing is wrong.
We just went to our house to get old albums so maybe looking will trigger his memory of the past, and people that had meaning in his life.
Please let me know how things develop and say a prayer for me as I too go to the Doctor at the end of this month.
Lovingly,
Roberts Mom
Jessica — June 16, 2009 @ 8:21 pm
Dear Robert’s Mom - I absolutely read the blog! Keep typing! Thanks so much for keeping my mom and family in your prayers. It means the world. I just hope we get some more time without any more chemo. Mom is feeling better, working part time, and is now not wearing her wig. I hope and pray every single day the cancer has not spread.
I know about drywall - I live on the 3rd floor of my condo building and we had a leaking roof one year and they had to cut into the wall in my bedroom to figure out what was going on. I think I STILL see drywall dust in my room - 5 years later! I hope you get to move back home soon for Herb’s sake - I can only imagine how hard it must be on him.
It’s raining cats and dogs here in Chicago - When is summer going to come?
Thinking of you and praying for a good doctors appt for you … Cheers and Love - Jessica
Jean Dover — June 20, 2009 @ 7:55 pm
Dear Jessica,
I spoke to my Brother who lives outside of Chicago in Oak Brook. He was without electricity for 18 hours from a huge storm. All his frozen food had to go. Poor Guy. He is 86 and is now nursing his Care Giver through terminal Lung cancer. Did you suffer from the same storm?
We too have had unseasonable tropical storms most every day. In Florida it can be raining on one side of the street and dry on the other. Yesterday we braved the storm to find a few blocks down the sun was shinning and it was completely dry.
I will pray your Mom won’t need anymore chemo for years to come. It must feel great to her to be able to get out and work. Not having to wear a wig is a blessing in the heat. I remember taking mine off and finding all this curly hair around my face. Of course when it grew out it was straight again. Hair is hair and I am happy to settle. My last 11 Olimta infusions did not cause my hair to fall out but I still have my faithful wig waiting should I need it again.
We are coming to the home stretch and hope to be in our house by next Friday. Herb says his house is in Chicago so I walk him to our house two doors down and show him his room but the memory doesn’t last. It is strange when he chats with Robert on the phone he sounds normal so Robert thinks he is doing great. I went to a caregivers meeting and the Lady speaker from the Alzheimer’s Institute said when your children come over for a few hours and chat with your spouse they think they are doing great, but let them change with you and stay for 24 hours and then check how well things are going.
So dear Jessica I hope you are getting in some riding between the rain drops and family.
Take care and know you are thought of with love.
Roberts Mom
Jessica — June 21, 2009 @ 7:09 pm
Hi Robert’s Mom - First of all - Happy Father’s Day to Herb! To answer your question - yes - horrible weather on Friday night! The storms starting rolling in over the lunch hour and kept on coming until 10pm that night! I work in the Sears Tower and at one point they recommended we move away from all of the windows. I was fortunate not to lose power, so the air conditioning stayed on for me. I do have several friends who lost power and even one who was sent home from work in the afternoon because the ceiling caved in at her office! It’s been very warm and humid ever since. We started out the week with weather in the 60’s and ended it with temperatures in the 90’s! Only in Chicago! I can’t wait to hear that you are back in your own place, and hopefully Herb will have some comfort once you are back in more familiary territory …
I’ve got a lot of anxiety about our doctors appointment and have spent quite a bit of time lately praying for a no progression diagnosis. Mom’s feeling well and it will be a huge disappointment if she has to continue more chemo. Like you pointed out, a wig in hot weather is not a lot of fun! Mom and I watched my nieces last night so my sister and brother in law could go to a wedding in Oakbrook at the Drake, and mom kept up with the little ones with no problems! Unfortunately she didn’t sleep very well there and frankly I think it is mostly anxiety related… Hopefully she’ll do better in her own bed tonight!
I’ll be sure to update you on the goings on here - be praying for us around 10:45 am Chicago time. As always, thank you so much for the thoughts and prayers. You are truly a class act and I feel lucky to be able to hear from you so often … Talk soon - Cheers and love - Jessica

Dear Jean, How was UR visit with the Roberts on Father’s Day? Love, Julie
Jean Dover — June 22, 2009 @ 4:57 pm
Dearest Julie,
Robert was in Gladstone New Jersey for the big horse show there. They had so much rain Sunday it was called off and he worked with many riders he was supposed to work with today. He just called from the airport before boarding a plane back to Florida.
Your Robert was here with Simon for dinner. He solved my IPhone problem. The letters and numbers were too small for me to navigate. Now they are large. Then he discovered a way to unlock our oven. Neither Herb or I had a clue. I ended up making a frozen Lasagna in the microwave. We didn’t go hungry.
“Simon The Terrible” their adorable one year old Schnoodle is full of fun but he knows exactly what he wants and where he wants to be. We went from the rental house to our house two doors down and he wanted no part of that. He was afraid he was gong to be left behind, Robert said “Come on Simon we are going in”. Simon stood his ground. Then he walked to the car. We had to really go in so he would follow. Got to love the kid in him. I remember Dale & Robert doing the same thing to me as children. I used to go around the block in my car while they stood in the window crying. I would go back in and say “Are you coming now?” Robert would look at Dale, his big sister, for the answer and depending if she thought I had suffered enough they would come like lambs.
It looks like another,7th week, in the rental. The carpet was supposed to be in today but it is 5:17 and no sign of the installers yet. I just called and they will come at 9:30 tomorrow morning. It is just as well as it is starting to rain here.
Stay tuned. The saga isn’t over till it is over.
Love Jean
Jessica — June 22, 2009 @ 7:57 pm
Hi Roberts Mom - We did not get good news today. I appreciate all of the prayers. Mom has had 4 new spots show up on her lungs, so we start second line chemo on Thursday. This time is carboplatin and taxol. It will be better (hopefully) that the first time around as she only has to go once every three weeks. As you can imagine I am devastated. I hope and pray that the next round works. The onc doesnt want to give up and neither does my mom - Actually I think she is taking this better than I am … Please say some more prayers for us. It’s meant more to me than anyone will ever know … Jessica
Jean Dover — June 23, 2009 @ 10:38 am
Dearest Jessica,
When I read your news today all my problems melted away and I am ashamed to feel so sorry for myself. You know I will continue to pray both morning & night.
The carpet was supposed to be put down yesterday. It never happened. Today Mother Nature postponed things yet again with a tropical storm. Lots of thunder and lightening. Maybe you will laugh with me when I tell you the only people who braved the storm were two men to give me an estimate on rehanging the Hurricane shutters that were not put up according to code. Stay tuned on that.
Jessica, chemotherapy never helped me either. When I finished with it I was given 3 to 6 months so my advise to you is not to give up if it doesn’t help your Mom. What did work for me was Alimta. Please ask your Doctor to give it a try if all else fails.
May G-D bless you and your parents,
Love,
Roberts Mom
Jessica — June 25, 2009 @ 8:40 pm
Hi Jean - Well we are one chemo treatment down. Mom didn’t have to have a blood transfusion so that was a big load off. She doesn’t want a strangers blood and unfortunately me, my sister and my dad are unable to donate for her. We are B negative and she’s O positive. Several of her co-workers have stepped up and offered to bank blood for her if needed. We are so blessed with so many good friends (you included). I don’t think mom’s type of cancer responds to Alimta, but if this all doesn’t work I will definitely say something. She was still a little shaken when I picked her up tonight, but we had dinner and now she is home (hopefully resting, but I think she’s on the phone). Feeling a little more emotionally stronger today. Still sad, but I am sucking it up for my mom!
I hope you have carpet today! Hopefully you will be back home soon. Still hotter than anything here in Chicago. Stifling 95 degree heat with lots of humidity - But I know you know how that goes being down in Florida. I think I am dry heat person. When I retire I think I am going to do the Arizona thing … Maybe Vegas. I like it there too!
Next weeks weather is supposed to be more my style - 80 and partly sunny with no humidity. How is Herb doing?
Talk soon - Jessica
Jean Dover — July 8, 2009 @ 7:01 pm
Dear Jessica,
Here it is July 8th and you e-mailed June 25th! I never did get to read your message until today as that great world genius AT&T and their DSL Technician couldn’t get my computer working once we were back in our own villa. After he left I tried to go on line but no luck again. Then I spent one hour and forty five minutes speaking with and following instructions on the phone. Today it was back to not working so I had my computer guy here for two hours, also on the phone, and tonight I am finally on line. I got tired just writing that!
I hate to share troubles that are, thank goodness, not health related but… would you believe the rain came in the same place it all started 8 weeks ago! I sat on the new carpet and cried for a second and then reminded myself it wasn’t my health. Now we have a tarp over the roof for who knows how long. Our condominium is being sued for one million by the roofers that did bad jobs on many villas including ours. We are counter suing so it is going to be a long wet season praying for the best and dreading the worst.
By now your Mom must have had another chemo treatment. I feel for her and pray it all goes well and brings her back to perfect health.
My appointment with my Oncologist went well. He didn’t hear or feel anything to worry about and as I feel about the same he decided I should wait until the end of August to have any testing done. I agreed as I am enjoying my freedom to have a life away from treatment for just a little while longer. Please G-D.
On the light side our beautiful Granddaughter Morgan, the budding actress, was cast as Isabella in the Shakespeare festival in Austin Texas this September. Herb & I would love to be there, so say a little prayer for us.
I know Chicago weather is unpredictable but South Florida has to be the worst for tropical storms that flood everything and leave puddles for mosquitoes to breed.
Well Jessica, thanks for keeping in touch. I hope to hear good news from you soon.
How was your 4th.?
Love,
Roberts Mom
Jessica — July 12, 2009 @ 7:34 pm
Hi Roberts Mom! I was hoping the reason I didn’t hear from you meant you were moving back into your place! I am sorry to hear that your roof is still leaky - What a pain! Mom has her next treatment this coming Thursday. I know it’s effects are cumulative, but she’s handling this chemo very well. Her best friend will be here Wednesday to visit her and she’s going to shave her head for her (hair should start falling out soon). So far she really has only been fatigued the weekend after treatment. She’s still working 4 hours every day (and that’s a blessing -she really enjoys being at work). So I am thankful for every day she is able to go to my sisters with me and play with her grandkids.
I’ll definitely keep my fingers crossed that you and Herb will be able to travel to Texas for the Shakespeare festival. How fun! I went to school at the University of Iowa and they have a Shakespeare Theater and put on plays there all throughout the summer!
The weather here has been very unusual - Mostly cooler than normal and probably more rain than normal too - Nothing like what you have been getting in South Florida!
Our 4th of July was good. Went to a barbeque with family and then mom and I went to see the fireworks. How was yours?
So so happy to hear you you have a break in any kind of treatment - That’s fantastic news? How is Herb doing now that you are back in your place? I hope he’s better …
Well I need to make something for myself for dinner - Looking forward to hearing from you soon! Cheers! jessica
Jean Dover — July 12, 2009 @ 8:43 pm
Dear Jessica,
Your Mom is so brave. I admire her and know with all the prayers being sent up stairs in her behalf SHE WILL GET BETTER!
Having your sister and her children around must help a lot. We can’t wait to see our daughter Margo Thursday night even if she only gets to stay a few days. We will take what we can get and be thankful for that.
Today I was trying to do a little laundry in our 20 year old washer. Sure it is old but in 16 years I have only had one service call. The man said don’t get rid of it the new ones only last a few years. They don’t make them like this any more. Hum. Mine refuses to turn off but won’t spin dry. Poor Herb had the job of wringing out every thing. I finally unplugged it.
Next my uncle (92) called on my cellphone to say our telephone was disconnected. He was right! Yesterday I received a 14.95 credit check. Our number was not used for over 8 weeks as they didn’t turn it on for 10 days after we moved back in. After I deal with that Jessica I have to go to city hall and buy, if I can, a permit to have our hurricane shutters re-installed. No one wanted to rehang them as they say they are not up to code. I finally found out what that means. Some were hung on the wood part of the villa with the wrong kind of screws. Can you beat that?
I am one tired cookie so I will answer all your questions as soon as the dust settles.
Love You,
Roberts Mom
