Facebook Follies
So here’s the thing. I have been on Facebook for about a year now and have accumulated quite a few friends, for which I am very happy. Connecting with both horse and non-horse people from around the world has proven very interesting and re-connecting with old friends has been the best thing for me.
But now I’ve run into a glitch- you see, somehow I ended up with 2 accounts, one of which has my picture and more than 99% of my traffic, and the other without a picture and only maybe 1%. Not this was not such a big problem until I wanted to go on my laptop onto Facebook and it would only let me onto the bogus account. After an hour of trying to deal with it myself, I finally called my webmaster, Julian, who naturally was able to fix my disaster in 5 minutes or less. What can i say - college kids know everything!
Well, the fly in the ointment is that, during the 5 days which I was too busy to go on my Facebook account, 106 people asked to ‘Friend” me. Normally I would go on my Blackberry daily and decide to make of delete these Friends, but now that there were so many my hand-held could not download them and would only go to a blank page. And that is why I was trying to do it from my laptop instead in the first place, you see?
So, I started clicking on each of the individuals at 9pm last night but was so exhausted from the last hour that I just couldn’t sit one more minute in front of the computer, and went to bed instead.
So I’m once again about to begin the process of accepting or rejecting prospective friends but I decided that complaining to my friends on Dover’s World first was justified. I guess I’ve whined enough to you all and will get right at it now.
Cheers!
RD

Wow 106 friends. Should we be impressed?
or sad for you that they’re not real life ones!
No doubt you’ll have time to deal with them on your mobile phone when you’re doing riding lessons.

Hey Justin.
Actually, I am blessed with many wonderful friends who I love very much. But I must have done something very terrible to you for you to dislike me so much. Funny, since I don’t actually think I’ve ever met you. I wonder, considering I write my blog for the enjoyment of my readers, why you would even be spending your valuable time on my site at all? I promise I won’t take offense if you choose never to log onto Dover’s World again.
Cheers!

Robert….talk to your web dude again…I am hearing from another Facebooker who had reached “maximun friendage” that there is a limit to the number of friends but if you instead use a Fan Page you can have many more. I know Steffen Peters has one set up that way. I think that anyone can “Become a Fan” without specifically being added as a friend which eliminates that chore for you and will still leave room for people you actually know to be your “friends”. You can still post updates and such there as well…not sure if it’s free however…ask the masters!

Christine has a great idea. The fan pages are a little more business oriented, and don’t require extra work on your part. That way, you’ll have a way to advertise to fans, who don’t visit Dover’s World (Which they may not know about… and would make a great first post!!!) to sign up for the more “business” side of things, and keep the profile page, one where true friends can sign up. It also allows those who are fans to sign up and have Facebook make suggestions of groups/fansite suggestions to their friends without any human intervention.

I am now dealing with emails and updates to my horse. I got a little overly competitive with those pyramid schemes masquarading as games, and when I needed more friends to play so that I could expand my empire, I decided rather than bothering my friends, and, having my own email server where I could create more email addresses than I could answer, I’d sign my horse up. It seemed like a good idea at the time. But within 5 mintutes, our niece (who is 29 and should have recognized my plot), did a friend request. I am now getting friend requests from friends of my husband, and my husband’s family. Do they friend request me??? No. It’s my horse. Yes my boy does love technology, and being an alpha with a name of Supertown Romance, I don’t know what I was thinking signing Mr. Romance up for a facebook account. I now find myself editing the profile of my horse, since I don’t want to explain the difference between stallions and geldings to underage friends and family (I was glad that the gender was only “male”). I even put up his parents as his biological ones. And since they’re quarter horses, they have first and last names. Now I’m wondering if I need to explain why his Dad has a different last name. And Dad’s last name is Gin.
And Justin, if I remove my family members… my horse has more friends than I do. At least I’m secure enough to admit, he’s better looking than I am.

Add another one to the list - I’ll have to look for you on FB tonight when I get home!

One more thing - Sandra - You have cracked me up with your line about the horse having more friends than you if you take the family out! He must be a stunner!

Hi Robert,
I ran into the same problem (FB limits the # of friends you can have) so I started a fan page called Solve Horseback Riding Fears.
I can have an unlimited number of “fans”. I use that page to post video clips, articles, training tips etc. It works out great for everyone! You might want to think about doing something like that.

I agree that a fan page is a great idea — for you! Personally, I love having you as a friend on FB rather than being a fan of yours, although I will also become a fan to get updates that you post to your FB page. Just don’t unfriend me.
