Courtney Update -Friday Eve, March 5th
I wish I could report better news but as of an hour or so ago, Lendon said that there has been no change in Courtney’s situation. She remains in a coma but I just want to remind everyone that I personally know more than a few people who have come out of this state after many days and even months with little long-term deficiencies. So keep the prayers coming because Courtney is a fighter and needs us to go on fighting for her!
I was amazed by the number of helmets I saw being worn at the Derby the last 2 days. God works in mysterious ways and I do not believe that Courtney is at all finished with her journey in doing amazing things on this earth. So please keep posting your “I believe in a miracle for Courtney” messages on the post below this one. I hope that Lendon will share all of your messages with her family.
Love to all.

Thanks so much for keeping ‘us’ up-to-date. No change is better than worsening and will keep watching for the news that she is out of coma, which I am hopeful will happen. My best wishes to Courtney and her close friends and family during this trying time.

Robert… it’s still so early. Give it more time.. the next few days at least. Her brain needs the time for the swelling to go down. Her Cranial pressure is a 9 and that is a very good thing. She is embraced by God’s loving arms and the prayers of all are certainly powerful. I know she has a long road ahead of her. But I do have the faith that she will pull through….. I am going to be wearing a helmet. I never have, but its time. xoxo

Miracles are in God’s hands and so is Courtney. Just the news of her accident has caused many to put those helmets on. She is inspiring people even as she sleeps. Surely God in his mercy will return her to us all.

Courtney is one of the most determined folks I know as well as one of the most empathetic to the horse. She is a fighter and will come through this as she has other trials in her life. The dream lives on in her and it is not done.

Most of these injuries seem to occur NOT in the ring, that is during a show, but while schooling. That is when a horse is being asked something a bit more unusual, perhaps - that would lead to an accident. A good start would be forgoing those ball caps with a pony tail sticking out the back and wearing an approved helmet for schooling. This would include longing, I had a friend who recently was longing a horse that kicked out - hit her helmet and not her head.
So- how many serious accidents can anyone recall ever at a dressage competition (in the competition ring, not schooling)- or are these simply in the warm up ring or at home, where most dressage riders seem to be very lax. Many are freak accidents, like the women who was riding her horse in the barn, he reared and she broke her neck (why would anyone ride through a barn) or the women who was kicked in the face while trimming a tail (why would you put your face near the back end of a horse).. horses can be fractious and this is a dangerous sport. Women seem to want a horse as a pet, but let’s face it- they are not and you can get injured or worse in this sport. It is awful that riders don’t wear head protection which obviously, in this case, would have kept this wonderful women with us and competing today. I’ts just so sad that this is preventable and very few of us wear hard hats as a matter of course. Maybe it’s when you become a mom and you are responsible for someone else that the “protection” vibe sinks in- but I have been riding for 55 years, fox hunting, jumpers, hunters, dressage- never gone out once without a hard hat.
I am so sad for her it’s tragic.

I believe in a miracle for Courtney! I also pray that my own trainer and others at my barn will start wearing helmets. I wish it were a barn policy for all riders (not just those under 18 yrs.) with no exceptions.
