A Sad Event!
Right now, below my apartment in the bay, a baby 9 foot whale is NOT being rescued by more than 5 police and other boats which for over 3 hours now have done little else than just watch the injured animal and keep oncoming boats from hitting it. It is so sad! The news helocopters hav been hovering over and many people have ben standing on the bridge of highway 395, watching the baby swim in circles. I simply can’t understand why, what with Sea World so close by, they can’t figure out a way to sedate it and move it on one of the boats to a sfae place where they can treat the injuries and at least give it a chance to survive. I thought this kind of thing happens often enough for someone somewhere to be ready and prepared for such an incident.
There are now 6 boats out there surrounding the whale and still no rescue in sight. I’m afraid they plan to just let it die and this makes me so sad. It’s getting dark but I will post something again if a miracle happens and they save the baby whale.

Vancouver aquarium does this kind of rescue work.
Wonder if anyone has called them?
What kind of whale is it?
Perhaps it’s too far for them to be of any real assistance?
There must be a cetacean rescue org on the east coast..

At 11pm last night, the 2 boats left were still flanking the baby whale and I watched as it swam south toward open water with the boats following. When I awoke, the boats were nowhere in sight and I have heard nothing more. I know they were hoping to reunite the baby with its mother as, from what I was told, this was the only hope for its ultimate survival at that age. I sincerely hope that sometime in the night this is exactly what happened and now Mom and pup are swimming safely and happily out to sea.

Hello,
As a police officer I wish people would give us more credit. Since I assume you were not privy to any information from your window please don’t assume that all officers are heartless jerks. I am a huge animal lover and would not stand by and just watch an animal suffer. That being said I have also seen what happens when I am trying to get help for someone or an animal and the resources just are not available.
I would also like to know if you contacted anyone to assist the animal and police or did you just stand by and watch it suffer too? I would say that that is an unfair statement but said to prove a point.

Dear Kim,
I am very sorry and never meant to infer that I was holding the police to blame for the sad situation with the baby whale. If fact, I wrote later last evening that they were still there well into the night with it and I now believe that their only hope was to see if it would swim out and be reunited with its mother. All of us called in to ask what was or could be done for it and I’m sure the police were fed up with all the calls for help. I guess I just could not understand, what with the proximity of the Miami Seaquarium, why there was no way to sedate it and bring it there to try to save it. Perhaps it is my ignorance of whales that I thought could be “bottle fed” somehow until weaned onto fish. I honestly don’t know, but you can imagine since you love animals as so many of us do, how hard it was to just watch hour after hour to no avail. This morning there was no sign of the boats or the whale and I still have not been able to learn what the outcome was, though I will continue to ask and let you all know if I find out. Anyway, thanks for setting me straight.

Sadly these things happen all too often ; like the rest of life- random and sometimes tragic. I have seen pilot whales that have beached themselves during the night and die when no one was aware of their situations. These are recurring tragedies that are beyond our comprehension NOW. Maybe one day we will understand why these things happen to both helpless animals and people in dire distress; they never quite find the support and guidance they need to survive -. I grow older (and sometimes more enlightened), but still find myself helpless in many situations–to care and sympathize is sometimes all we have- .

So, folks, I can report to you that the baby whale was spotted again today and followed for a while before it was last seen swimming out to sea. I am going with the thought that it is now reunited with Mom and having a way overdue “Happy Meal”!
