Another ‘F’ Word - “FRUSTRATING!”
Well, I did it again. Not that I frequently lose things, because I truly don’t, but every once in a while I will forget where I left something and it is so FRUSTRATING! I mean, I’m pretty sure that there are pairs of gloves or spurs at most every dealer’s barn throughout Europe which I put down on the rail or seat and simply forgot to pick up. But, last week I was in Canada and used my license to pick up my rental car and that’s the last time I remember having it.
So, today I was at the local DMV at exactly 9:00am which I thought would make me at the front of the line, but the people were standing in a long que way outside the door already. When I finally got up to the front, the very kind lady explained that I needed not one but 2 forms of identity as well as my car registration and my Social Security Card. I was so excited because I had brought my briefcase with everything in it; that is, everything accept for my SS card which somehow had also gone missing. Oy veh!
So the very nice lady said I could go and look for it or head a couple of miles down the road the the Social Security Centre and get a new one done. Sounds easy, right? I got to the other building 15 minutes later and waited another hour in line before coming up to another lady who wasn’t quite so nice as the first. She pretty much didn’t want anything to do with her job or those she had to help. Nevertheless, I got my temporary Social Security Card and headed back to the DMV, now very hungry since I had neglected to eat breakfast and it was mid-afternoon. I basically walked right up and gave the nice lady everything she had wished for and she told me I was still missing a key document. What? How? Why? Huh? It seems that my new SS card had the address of my brand new home we just bought on it, since that is the one I had given the not so nice lady earlier, but I now needed the closing document as well to prove that this actually is my new address. So then I had to call my very sweet attorney and ask her to please fax the page of the closing document which proves we are the owners at this new address. I was told to sit down and they would call me up when the fax came in. 20 minutes later, I’m still waiting and schvitzing since there’s no A/C in this building and I call back my lawyer who tells me she faxed the page the second she got off the phone with me. OK, so I march myself back up to the lady and tell her this and she walks back to the fax where low and behold, the document is waiting. I’m now seeing the light at the end of the tunnel as she once again tells me to sit down and my duplicate license would be brought out to me in the next 5 minutes. The only problem was that my nice lady’s shif was up and a white-haired gentleman took her place. Well, obviously he had not gotten the message that my new licence was to be brought out to me in the next 5 minutes, because 25 minutes later I was still sitting there waiting. Finally, I just couldn’t stand it any longer, so I went to the man and told him that my 5 minute wait had now lasted close to a half hour. He actually apologized and said it was his fault, went back to the back counter and came back a minute later with my duplicate license. Hooray! I’m legal again and will be able to rent a car on Saturday when I get to Toronto for the “Send-Off To Kentucky” benefit for the Canadian Team and future programs.
And what does all this mean to you, especially my Canadian readers? If I had to go through a day like I did today to be sure to be there on Sunday, i certainly hope you are going to make every effort to come out and support our Team and the kids whi will be our future Team riders! Maybe you should be a little nervous about misplacing your Social Security Card. That is one of the key items used in identity theft. Anyway, your experience is typical of anyone’s visit to the DMV. Just amazed at the patience you displayed.

And I thought it was a commentary on how to keep track of your license! Glad it all turned out well…

If only there was a way to auction off a “jump to the head of the line” card at the DMV, or any other agency, both the Canadian and American dressage teams could probably be financed for the next decade or so.
Glad you were able to get your license replacement.

And here’s hoping that Sunday puts a tick in the G column for a Grand Success for you and our Canadian neighbors.
