Unemployment :-)
My friend, Jamie White Welling through a party for her husband, Tom, to celebrate the end of the 10th and final season of Smallville, the great TV show in which he starred as a young Clark Kent/Superman. I was lucky enough to be out in L.A. for the CDIW in Burbank doing my final “gig” as the Technical/Coach Advisor for Canada which allowed me to attend the party along with many other guests.
So here’s the thing. I have always been addicted to Superman, well before Tom was alive. So when Smallville began as a series, I was immediately hooked. In 2004, I was going to my car in the hotel garage to go out to the show grounds in Cota de Casa, the venue for the final Olympic selection trials. I had my riding clothes and a Subway sandwich in my hands and this nice couple stopped me to say hello. To this day, I’m pretty sure I was not particularly sociable as I was in that “gotta win and make another team mode”. I know for sure I kept moving straight on to my vehicle while apparently, from what they both reminded me the other evening, I replied to their hoping that we’d run into each other again and chat, with one word. “Absolutely!” Now, just to be fair, Tom wore a ball cap just as he still does when out in public and I had no idea who this couple of “fans” was.
Fast forward to 2005 at the World Cup in Las Vegas. Our Equestrian Aid Foundation was putting on our 2nd huge event at the Hard Rock Hotel with Ben Harper who appeared because of his friendship with two people I adore, Kate Kapshaw and Steven Spielberg. It was a fantastic event- completely sold out- and as the host I made it a point of thanking the people who were at the major sponsor tables. Well, someone told me that Tom Welling and his wife, Jamie, were sitting at the table, front and center, so naturally I ran, not walked, to meet (OK, so drool over would be more accurate) them (OK, him, to be accurate) and thank them for coming out to support the EAF. Which is when they looked up and reminded me that we had met the year before. “Huh?”. I would remember if I had met “Superman”, right? So then they re-told the entire story which I pathetically remembered and apologised for and still do today, not because they are “them”, but because I should have been nicer to anyone who wanted to compliment me by saying “hi”.
Years have gone by and we’ve remained friends. Jamie is becoming an excellent and serious rider and has a great group of horses. We laugh and carry on but she is very serious and ambitious, which I love. Do I still look at Tom and drool a bit? Look, I love Robert and all that but you try standing next to Superman and stay calm! :). Seriously, Tom and Jamie are wonderful people with a great relationship and now that he and I are both moving on to who knows exactly what in our professional lives, we have unemployment in common as well as Jamie and the horses. Onward and upward - “No Tights, No Flights!”

Lots of stars and models but not from Smallville that I saw. They already has done a party for the cast in Vancouver where it was filmed, so these were their personal friends from LA.

Thank you very much for sharing with us your story on how you met Tom&Jamie. I really appreciate all the details you shared. I have many questions about that happy couple that I love so much even though I have never met them, and you just answered most of them. I love Tom and Jamie! Cheers!

Thanks for sharing. Tom has a lot of fans. Some of us are trying to remain fans even though he was even more rude to us when we were in his presence. I wouldn’t worry too much about apologizing to him. On the other hand, maybe you could teach him a thing or two.

Isn´t Tom Welling going to be SuperMan in The Justige League movie ?
That would be really cool having Tom with the background in Smallville. Would be a really good idea. Was thinking when i saw Superman: Returns, couple of years ago i was that Tom Welling would have been a better choice for the role.
Hope to see him in the JL movie.

Wishing you both success in your future’s Umemployment brought a big change in my life. Went from a production work to becoming a RN at 45. Love the show Smallville and all the actors from the show and want to wish them all luck. When I was in school Smallville was the one show that I made a point of watching, my time was very limited. I’m really enjoyed hearing about Tom and Jamie’s interest in horses and wish Jamie much luck and joy with showing in the equestrian events

Thank you for tell us your story on meeting Tom and Jamie. Jamie is a lucky lady to be married to such a wonderful man. They make a beautiful couple. I saw Tom at Comic-con last year. I was a little disappointed that he didn’t stay to sign autographs. Anyway, I will miss watching Smallville after May 13th. I hope good luck to Tom on future acting projects and good luck on you finding a new job.

Adorable! These two fascinate me because of how long they have been together and how uncommon they seem. We are the same age, and I have been with my husband 13 years as well. A main difference though is mass public adoration. A very BIG testiment that they stay strong through.
Tom you shine, but what makes you a SUPER STAR in my book is how you loyally love your wife. Jamie you are obviously your own Super Star!

Great photo, they look very happy, Tom very handsome and Jamie looking radiant and beautiful. I hope the stories of Tom cheating on his wife are not true, it would be highly disappointing to his fans. Sounds like Jamie stood by him all these 10 years, he would be a fool to cheat on a woman like that.
